Scoots and I have tweeted at each other over the years, beginning when I reached out about a random part of an episode where he mentioned Mr. Palmer, the $1000 question, and Roger the crazy little kid.1 I reached out again recently to see if he’d be up to connect on a Zoom call, and he graciously obliged.
I went into our call wanting to learn about his thoughts on napping and how he started and grew podcast over the years.2 I wound up learning that and a lot more — I really enjoyed our conversation and will look forward to the next one!

Scoots’ last great nap was this Father’s Day, when he went down around 5pm after a full day at a local country fair.3 He’d was afraid he’d wind up groggy, which happened after his last nap, where he thinks he may have been very heavily caffeinated — he described this as “the baffling nature of naps” — so he avoided the urge to slam coffee, lay down, and woke up feeling good.
Scoots normally gets up between 6:30 and 7:30am, drinks a ton of coffee during the day, and reads before going to bed, which he does at the same time every night. He used to nap every weekend starting around 2pm, though his work schedule and caffeine consumption have limited his napping more recently.
Scoots and I wrapped our call by saying it would be fun to do something together — stay tuned!
I’m hopeful we’ll find a way to see a Phish show together one of these days, though Scoots and I are on opposite coasts.
As you may have read, I’m highly curious.
All else equal, Scoots prefers to nap around 2pm, but sometimes you take what you can get. He likes the room very cold and dark — pro moves!
